We are delighted to be associated with the new memorial for historic people from Sturton (Notts).
A new memorial was installed at Sturton-le-Steeple in April 2025 to commemorate the great figures of the village’s Christian history. Some of the funding came from tours organised by Pilgrims & Prophets with much else being raised by enthusiastic villagers. Some of the village children also helped with the design work.
John Lassells, who was burnt at the stake in 1546, was a Protestant evangelical who was executed because he rejected the teaching of transubstantiation.
John Smyth was a leader of the Gainsborough separatist congregation who went to Amsterdam where he formed the first known congregation of English Baptists.
John Robinson was a separatist cleric who led the Leiden congregation from which the Mayflower Pilgrims developed.
Katherine White was Robinson’s sister in law and went with her husband John Carver on the ‘Mayflower’ to America. Both she and her husband died within a year of their arrival.
We hope this new memorial for historic people from Sturton will be much-visited and much-loved.
