THE RETFORD WIDOW, THE MISSIONARY AND THE CANNIBALS

We have released our latest Christian heritage story on YouTube. This is the story of James Chalmers, a famous Scottish missionary, and his second wife – Lizzie Harrison of Alma Road, Retford. It explains how Chalmers set up a mission amongst the cannibals of New Guinea and how Lizzie, a widowed housewife, went out to join him. After their marriage in Australia, he took her to an insect and cannibal infested area to live. Learn about Lizzie’s heroic sacrifice, Chalmers’ eventual martyrdom, and their amazing long-term impact on Christianity in Papua New Guinea. A widow, the missionary and cannibals – a fascinating story!

Scottish missionary James Chalmers married Jane Hercus, who had been a lodger in Lizzie’s home. She died in Papua New Guinea and after Lizzie’s first husband died, James wrote from the other side of the world to propose marriage. He became a famous missionary and author, but after Lizzie died he was murdered by cannibals with many of his helpers and the missionary Oliver Tompkins.
