John Whitgift is the subject for our new video life story. He was the late Tudor Archbishop of Canterbury and was born in Grimsby. His career was very controversial and he became a bitter enemy of our region’s puritans. It is possible to see him as one link in the chain that led to separatism and eventually to the ‘Mayflower’ voyage.
It is a fascinating story especially as he crosses path with our regional puritans like Walter Travers, incurs the hatred of torturer Richard Topcliffe, and fights off accusations in the Marprelate Letters.
